Re: Brilliant idea!

    Hi Ollie,
I am glad you enjoyed the article. The evening didn't have
a particular catchy name. At the time first grade did a
quarterly family reading night, so it was a scheduled event
    that families looked forward to.

I might add that since this time, the first grade family
reading night has gone school-wide (K-3). We still do it
quarterly and now we do have a "catchy" name each time. We
do some sort of theme like "Warm up to a good book," "Chill
out with a good book," "Have a Dog-gone Good Time Reading,"
etc. Each grade takes the theme a different direction.
Sometimes grade levels have "performances," sometimes a
sharing time for reading, information about increasing
    reading, but always refreshments!!!

We are fortunate that our school has great parent
involvement and typically what it takes to bring out
elementary parents is a "performance" of some kind. We
typically have at least 75% attendance at events of this
type, sometimes better. Our beginning of the year open
house is usually over 90% attendance and that is without
    refreshments :-)

This idea is definitely very adaptable to different grades
    and subjects.
