Post: Teachers Lounge - To go or Not to Go?
Posted by Ked on 3/27/08
What a wonderful teaching environment we all would share if all of our teacher's lounges were as pleasant and supportive as Pat's is. I tried my school's teacher's lounge for the first few months I was in the building, but as a special education teacher who works with students with varying levels of learning and behavioral disabilities, I found the teacher's lounge to be a place where other teachers would outwardly discuss and complain about these young people in front of other building staff. I take the privacy of my students very seriously, and do not feel that their behaviors/classroom performances need to be shared with teachers that do not know or have these young people in class. My requests went unhonored, so to eliviate these sorts of privacy issues, I just stay out of the lounge as much as possible. I work with some wonderful educators in all areas of our building, but to keep the peace with other teachers and to help keep my students' concern private, I eat lunch in my room.
