Post: Little Big Issue..
Posted by ALW on 3/28/08
Wow! I'm a beginning elementary education student (at 47)... and I hope I can get over some of my "old school" ideas about things. It worries me that my 2nd grade daughter, who does well on spelling tests, will misspell words when she does a free write exercise. Or she will ask me how to spell basic words that I think she should know. Of course, I always make her think it through... listen for sounds, etc. It also concerns me that kids don't get classroom instruction on how to properly write their letters anymore? As a volunteer, I see kids whose handwriting skills are so minimal, that I'm wondering how in the world will they succeed in the upcoming grades? I guess I've got a lot to learn. I just hate the notion that just because many of us use keyboards to "write" that it's no longer necessary to teach children the value of writing well, the old fashioned way. God forbid the power should ever go out!
