Post: Dignity
Posted by joan boykins on 5/12/08
I'm giving up on the classrooom. I have been a special education teacher for nine years. I will no longer fight the battle for equity for my students. I will no longer beg for books and supplies. I will no longer ask the questions about why we are not included in the school budget.I will no longer argue in defense of my students' right to be included in the regular classroom. Special needs students have a right to be treated with dignity regardless of the classroom they are in. Something in the school system is broken and is in dire need of repair. The negative treatment and negative attitude toward special needs students has been prevalent for a long time. This issue needs to be addressed. I have decided to advocate on a different level for these special students. Hopefully, I can elicit help from others to help change the negative attitudes and treatments toward special needs students. Thank you Laura for giving voice to this problem. Joan Boykins
