Post: Wonderful article
Posted by Special Ed Teacher on 5/23/08
What a beautiful article! I am a teacher of special education, and I am in a magnet school for the "gifted and talented". We are the first special ed room that this school ever had. Before we got here, the parents went to the School Board to ask them to not let our room open. The principal tried to keep us out and on the first day of school told me that we were not wanted here. Teachers refused to take my students into their mainstreaming classes. Thanks to a teacher surplus, budget cuts and lack of retirees, most of the teachers at this school have taught 30+ years, and remember a time when special ed students were in institutions. In not so many words, some let me know that this still should be the case. Yet we are still here. What made the difference? Students. The other students didn't care about the disabilities. They helped my kids all year. Meantime, I also had teachers & administration "forget" to include my kids. I had to constantly stay on top of everything to make sure that we were included. As the author said, this is part of the job, but still. Again, great article!
