These Valentine and heart themed activities will enhance learning and win the hearts of young students.

Place two English muffin halves on a plate, one above the other, like a snowman. Spread cream cheese or white cake icing on the muffins. Add M&M candies or raisins for the eyes and mouth. Add a baby carrot for the nose. Add a piece of a fruit leather strip (fruit roll-up) for the scarf.

Your students will enjoy these ideas for Christmas Centers, most of which are adaptable to non-holiday themes.

This is a symbol game that can be played two ways, and with different symbols: letters, numerals, or shapes. You will need to make some cards using cardstock or index cards (I made mine about 2″ square). Place pumpkin stickers on the back of each card or use clipart. Of course, you can use this with any holiday or theme by using different images.

As teachers, we often do not have a lot of money to spend on materials, yet we can never have enough. The first few months of school are the best time to ask parents to donate items to the classroom, because they are more likely to send them then. Here is a list of a few free items you can ask people to donate. Ask your students’ parents, grandparents, fellow teachers, and neighbors. As they say, one person’s junk is another’s treasure.
