Are Some School Administrators Afraid of Outstanding Teachers?
By Teachers.Net News DeskAren’t great teachers what every school administrator wants?
Maybe not all…
During a discussion on one of the Chatboards, where some have offered the opinion that sometimes teachers who are outstanding, veteran teachers are targeted or forced out of a school by an administrator. Someone asked why any administrator would force out instead of cherishing the best teacher/s. Aren’t great teachers what all school administrators want?
A regular poster known as “MacQ” responded:
Speaking as a teacher of 28+ years and an administrator of about 2 years, I have a few opinions about this.
1. Many administrators are afraid of outstanding teachers, as they themselves were never that great as a teacher.
2. Many administrators do not know how to manage outstanding teachers.
3. Many administrators do not know how to lead outstanding teachers.
4. Many administrators want teachers who will all “march to the same tune” in rank and file (so to speak)…outstanding teachers don’t do this.
5. In this day and age of mandated curriculum, assessments, and scripted teaching, many administrators do not want excellent teachers but rather, those who can “deliver a curriculum.”
Mind you, not all administrators are like this. The great ones seek great teachers. The not so great…….
