Now THIS is the way to honor a special Teacher! Longtime member of the Teachers.Net community “Magoo” posted about this very special observance of her retirement from substitute teaching:
reasons.
This morning was the awards assembly for all the kids (about 350, K-6), and I was asked to be there. I figured I’d maybe get a certificate, maybe a flower.
Well. At the very end the principal asked me to come up on stage. When I got there and turned around, I saw the entire school, kids and staff and teachers, standing up, hollering and clapping. For ME. A SUB. The principal said some nice things and told me to open the large flat object on the table in front of us. When I saw what it was I nearly fell off the stage.
It is a huge plaque 16″x18″, almost like a sign, and it says, “M—’s (my first name) Book Nook in honor of M. F. our substitute extraordinaire. June 9, 2010″
It has an etched (?) stack of books on one side.
They are going to hang it on the wall in the school library, near where I always sat when reading to the kids!!! I am to go in tomorrow to walk with the library lady about it.
Can you imagine??!!!??? I was nearly speechless. I am sitting here now, 3 hours later, still not quite believing
it.
I plan to go back and read to kids until I fall over dead, on a volunteer basis, but…to have something like that, which will be there till they tear down the building…I am so honored and proud and humbled and shocked, all at the same time.
