Jessica Fenton walked into her first year in the classroom and like so many new teachers, was caught off guard. The obstacles she encountered left her feeling unprepared and overwhelmed. She ran into problems that were never dealt with in her college education courses. She struggled to find answers for the stressed out parents asking for advice. She had piles of administrative paperwork. Juggling teaching with meetings and extra-curricular activities seemed impossible. Finding time to prep for classes she wasn't trained to teach meant giving up sleep.
Jessica was one of my all time favorite students. When she asked me to write a letter of recommendation for her, I answered quickly, easily, “Absolutely!” Jessica left, leaving me …

Motives for stealing can differ from child to child, and any one child can steal for a variety of reasons.
What would happen if students were allowed to select their teachers?

There you stand trying to get the attention of your thirty-four students. Each one is so different from the others that it would take hours to list their physical, mental, emotional, and cultural differences. Yet, your job is to impart to this group a very specific body of information and skills in a prescribed amount of time using pre- scribed texts and materials – and you are to keep them quiet, attentive, and on-task after you give them an assignment. Totally impossible to do hour after hour, day after day.
Educating the best and the brightest in this brave new world will take a new and improved educational paradigm. Allowing our educational tools to age in the corner of the classroom will be the mistake that may cost us our future. Throwing away masses of children to inequitable access will ensure that we languish at the bottom of the global pool of employable workers for decades to come.
Autistic Spectrum Disorder – Resources to help with challenges and solutions
The latest research indicates that 1 in 150 births[1] are estimated to be in the Autistic Spectrum. Consequently, children in the autistic spectrum make up an increasingly significant segment of the public school classroom. Now, more than ever before, teachers face the challenge to meet the requirements of a diverse classroom and there’s no magic formula to address each child’s unique needs. So, to support your efforts to help children with autism reach their potential, we offer nine surefire …

At Thanksgiving dinner, my grandfather used to blurt out whatever was on his mind, interrupt others while they were talking, and dominate the conversation.
I was a grade schooler at the time, but if I could, I would have put him in time-out so the rest of us could join in the conversation.
But behavior like this isn’t just rude at Thanksgiving. It’s always rude. And it’s also always rude in the classroom.

As a new teacher, I was surprised to discover how often teachers distributed math
worksheets during instruction.
Reflecting upon the relationship between the “drill worksheets” and critical thinking has prompted me to wonder:
• How do these worksheets relate to our students?
• How do students connect them to a real-life situation that will arise and require a real answer?
• As students fill out these worksheets, are they aware that they are actually learning?
• Will they be able to apply this …
To plan physical education (PE) inquiry, teachers must consider the following questions.
• What do we want students to learn?
• What do teachers need to learn about this topic?
• How best will students learn?
• How will we know what students have learned?
What do we want students to learn?…

If you live in a region where robin sightings mean “SPRING IS HERE!” then your students will enjoy keeping track of their sightings on an easy to make chart you can post on the classroom wall or door. Just make or draw a simple red-breasted robin shape (don’t forget the worm!) and provide slips of paper nearby.
One of the greatest gifts we can give to another generation is our experience, our wisdom. —Desmond Tutu
In our all-school morning meeting one day, we watched the brief trailer for Andrew Zuckerman’s book called Wisdom. It begins with Scottish actor/comedian Billy Connolly: “Wisdom to me isn’t the answer. Wisdom is the question.” Zuckerman has gathered fifty global elders, filmed and photographed them, and collected their words, or questions, of wisdom. It was brief, and …

(Editor’s note: This post was composed before the Toyota recalls.)
A Ghanaian proverb says that the death of any nation begins in the homes of its people. Parents are the first teachers of their children.
I had a critic tell me that if Toyota put out a product as poor as the products produced by our public schools, then Toyota would go out of business. True, yet Toyota gets to choose …
