Marla’s Poetry Corner

By Marla Weinstein

Marla Weinstein Marla enjoys writing poems. Each month she will share one or two of her original poems, followed by suggestions for enriching classroom activities with poetry. She hopes you enjoy this month’s poetic offerings.

Holidays

Holidays are such a special time of year,

I am so excited because they’re near.

There are many different holidays all around,

You’ll celebrate the one depending on your background.

Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza are some to share,

Holidays bring love and laughter from those who care.

If you’ve lost a loved one and they’re not here to celebrate with you,

Hold them close to your heart remembering they’re proud of all you do.

Spending time with family and friends I adore,

I love getting candy, and gifts galore.

I could eat candy at every meal,

As long as I eat my fruits and veggies…that’s the deal.

Try not to eat too much cake and candy,

But enjoy yourself as much as can be.

Enjoy the happy smiles you’ll bring,

As you experience the gift of giving.

I hope your holiday season is safe and happy,

And peace and love is all you see.

Happy New Year

Midnight is the count down time,

For you to say bye to 2009.

So let’s do a New Year cheer,

Because it’s almost here.

December 31 is the date,

For you to have fun and celebrate.

This year when you ring in 2010,

Think about the past year and how you’ve been.

Looking back at your accomplishments and your mistakes,

Be kind to yourself and give yourself a break.

Set new goals which will positively guide you,

By making a realistic plan for what you want to do.

Take one step at a time to achieve your goal,

And make sure to play an active role.

When things get hard try not to quit,

Just take care of your mind, body, and spirit.

Happy New Year to you,

Wishing you happiness in all you do.
