Book Talk: Teachers List Favorite Reads

By Teachers.Net Community

_The Last Time I Saw You Elizabeth Berg (very good)

-Wesley the Owl, Stacy O’Brien non fiction about a biologist who raises

and cares for a barn owl for 20 years (Very interesting)

_Every Last One, Anna Quindlen (loved it; love Anna Quindlen)

_Beachcomber, Nancy Thayer (very light weight chick lit)

_The Island, Elin Hildibrand (same as above)

Ken/TX suggested:

Bodyguard of Lies by Anthony Cave Brown – a very good factual book about WW2.

Paula shared:

Dragon Lizard books. I love the Anne McCaffrey books. Written in the ’70′s or ’80′s, I read my first one not realizing it was Sci/Fi, thought it was fantasy. Love the Dragon Rider books as well.

ressa commented:

“The Tudors” By G.J. Meyer. It’s kinda heavy reading so I am looking forward to finishing and starting on “The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest” by Stieg Larsson — I blazed through the first two of the series.

Magoo posted:

“Hunting Eichmann”. I may reread my Mrs. Polifax books, also.

Elaine offered:

My summer reading isn’t going well . I just haven’t found books that engage me. Several of these have been books on tape; I rated them 1-5 with 5 being excellent:

Martin: When Crickets Cry (0)

Kwok: Girl in Translation (5)

Patchett: Bel Canto (5)

Brooks: People of the Book (5)

Meyer: Curse of the Blue Tattoo (5)

Barry: Map of True Places (4)

Lamott: Imperfect Birds (1)

Nafisi: Reading Lolita in Tehran (3)

Reading:

1. “This We Believe: Key to Educating Young Adolescents” by NMSA for a PD book study. The book isn’t very long but lots of good info for me.

2. ” A Patriot’s History of the United States” by Schweikart and Allen for pleasure. The book is very thick but I find it

interesting.

3. “Teach Like a Champion” because I was curious. There have been mixed reviews on tnet about this book. For those

that are reading TLC, there is a book discussion on the professional reading board.

Karen posted (after several said they gave up on reading Girl With the Dragon Tatoo because it was too slow):

It was slow going at first, but then I was hooked.

“regular” posted:

Just finished “The Last Song” and really enjoyed it for an easy read. It is my favorite Nicholas Sparks yet. Also reading, “Mennonite in a Little Black Dress” and totally loving it!.

Mama Bear’s picks:

One for the Money (laughed outloud)

I’m really into Catherine Coulter’s FBI series:

Blindside. Blowout. Point Blank. TailSpin

And:

Double Take. Family Ties. The Cottage

And I’m reading Teach Like a Champion and The Purpose of Boys.

Anon posted:

I’m reading People of the Book and it’s pretty good.

Harry & Rosemary Wong: Effective Teaching
Ten Year Summary of Articles, 2000 to 2010
During my 1st and 2nd year, I was completely clueless and going insane! I was SURE teaching was not for me and I was surviving aimlessly and hopelessly. I didn't know how to put my teaching problems into words as I did not know what was wrong. Then I found your articles on teachers.net and your book. And you said "steal!"
