Robin Watch Chart is Spring Fun for PreK – Primary

By Teachers.Net Community

A great idea contributed by a member of the Teachers.Net community!

If you live in a region where robin sightings mean “SPRING IS HERE!” then your students will enjoy keeping track of their sightings on an easy to make chart you can post on the classroom wall or door. Just make or draw a simple red-breasted robin shape (don’t forget the worm!)  and provide slips of paper nearby.

When they spot their first robin of the season, students add their names (and date and location depending upon grade level) to the robin by writing on slips of paper and taping them onto the robin.

Keep a class list on a clipboard so kids can cross off their names as they post; that way you’ll know at a glance which students have not yet participated. And, it gives the kids experience with record keeping. You’ll find younger students will be motivated to read the names on the chart and  clipboard to find out which of their friends have or haven’t yet seen this sign of Spring!

You might develop a form to send home with blanks for filling in the date and location of the sighting. For younger children, include a blackline robin drawing for them to color.

For the youngest students, use copies of their photos instead of names.
