What Florida Teachers are Talking About

By Teachers.Net Community

Orange teachers now have to SHARE printers!!!!!!
Was Posted by: annoyed beyond belief on 8/16/10
Today was the first day of pre-planning in Orange… among the surprises we found out was that we will no longer have individual printers in our classrooms!!!

Instead we will share one printer with a neighboring teacher. We will share one ink cartridge for the whole year. The printer won’t even be in our classrooms! It will be in a “common printing area” nearby.

We’re told this is helping to save jobs but wouldn’t it be
nice if Tallahassee actually funded education?

Can you imagine other professionals — such as doctors and
lawyers — sharing printers with each other?

My elementary school in Lake County says all thermostats are
set at 78 degrees to save money. My room is hot, even before
it is packed with 25 students! I keep my house set on 78, but
I have high ceilings, only a few people in the home, and
ceiling fans in each room. 78 seems pretty darn hot!

Same situation here. It’s 78 degrees in my classroom when the
a/c is actually working. It is constantly on the fritz, as soon
as they repair it it breaks again. I bought a fan and it helps a
little but I still have heat exhaustion.

You guys are scaring me! Right now I still have my own printer and
so does everyone else…so far (makes me wonder if they’ll sneak in
over the weekend and take a bunch out) and the ac is still set at
76, although it failed to work at all 2 days this week. :)

In Pinellas, I would say:
It may help if we would cut out some middle layer admin jobs. There
are teachers elevated to these positions of authority who have been
out of the classroom so long they wouldn’t know a lesson plan if it
bit them in the…. hand… making the decisions on what teachers
want and need. Simplify and localize the process.

Ask me, and I’d say, I want a class cool enough to stay awake, not
so cold I need a Parka (it appears there is no in-between).
Approve my supply list, give me a stipend to reimburse me for
classroom supplies- (I can stretch a dollar!) and stop wasting
thousands of dollars overpaying for materials we don’t want or
need.

OH, and if you want to put a new, million dollar program into
place, perhaps it would be wise to have it working, and have most
of the faculty using it trained BEFORE rolling it out to the
public. Do all that, and I will share a printer all day long. :-)

I believe the printer thing is something that your individual school
has come up with to cut down on costs rather than a district-wide
measure.

Oh,brother! That never occurred to me. You are probably right.
We also don’t have money for subs anymore @ my school
We also do not have subs anymore at my school. They are not in the
budget, LOL. Instead we will split classes this year. More lol. Wish I
were joking but I’m not.
