GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Child care work as a lead caregiver. Works with young children and families to develop their social, emotional and physical growth.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works with Education Coordinator to plan and implement early childhood curriculum. Assists in the development of individual education plans for children. Develops lesson plans in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards. Assists the Teacher Assistant in developing lesson plans. Maintains classroom records, progress reports, permission slips, accident reports and other necessary paperwork. Encourages parent involvement in the Head Start program both in the classroom and in the home. Works with Teacher Assistant to conduct home visits and parent meetings. Organizes and trains classroom volunteers in conjunction with Education Specialists and Center Committee Members. Studies and prepares recommendations on instructional materials, teaching and related equipment. Submits referrals to appropriate coordinator regarding concerns for individual children. Assists in the development and implementation of recommendations. Identifies and reports child abuse cases working in conjunction with the Case Manager. Participates in the design, development and delivery of pre-service in-service training programs that will enhance job performance and career advancement. Assists with the orientation of new teaching staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of early childhood growth and development. Knowledge of the practices, procedures and regulations in child care. Ability to gain knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards. Knowledge of development testing and evaluation procedures. Ability to receive and follow detailed instructions. Ability to supervise others. Ability to establish effective working relationships with the staff, parents and community representatives. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to develop and implement age-appropriate lesson plans. Ability to work and communicate with people from various multi-cultural backgrounds and socio-economic levels. Sensitivity to the needs, abilities, beliefs, and attitudes of individuals within and outside the Agency, including but not limited to clients and co-workers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Associate degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development or an Associate degree in a field related to Early Childhood Education and one (1) year experience teaching pre-school children. If degree is a closely related field, 18 credit hours in Early Childhood Education or child development is required.
