Position Summary: The Student Advocacy Coordinator performs school and community outreach work related to the Living for the Young Family through Education (LYFE) program to positively influence the life outcomes of student parents and their children by providing high-quality childcare, academic guidance, and social advocacy.

 

The Student Advocacy Coordinator will advocate for assistance and resources from community and partner organizations to assist the LYFE’s team Social Workers and administrators in supporting the development of projects related to the provision and quality of student services throughout the LYFE program’s 37 sites. Performs related work.

 

Reports to: Principal

 

Direct Reports: N/A

 

Key Relationships: Principal and Assistant Principals, Director of Program Strategy, LYFE Social Workers, LYFE Program Staff, Central Team Staff, and external agencies such as the City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, NYC Dads’ Fatherhood Initiative, and the NYC Nurse Family Partnership.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Develop and Manage Partnerships

 

  • Identifies, fosters and manages partnerships with relevant outside providers such as health, family, and college planning organizations.
  • Works with partners to creatively develop projects regarding new opportunities, challenges, and best practices that meet students’ life goals.
  • Manages current partnerships with agencies such as the City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, NYC Dads’ Fatherhood Initiative, and the NYC Nurse Family Partnership.
  • Supports in the execution of partnership agreements with Community Based Organizations (CBOs).

 

Student Advocacy Support

 

  • Serves as the coordinator of student advocacy projects under the leadership of the Director of Program Strategy and supports the strategic planning and implementation of program goals.
  • Collaborates with CBOs and internal stakeholders to support students meeting educational, transitional, and operational goals.
  • Assists with presentations to DOE schools/programs, Community Based Organizations, and other community partners to have access to resources and opportunities for students.

 

Staff Professional Development

 

  • Supports the planning and development of professional development sessions for Social Workers identifying relevant community resources.
  • Provides technical support to Assistant Principals and Social Workers to ensure quality implementation of program systems.

 

Program Development

 

  • Conducts research to identify resources and strengthen external partners for program development.
  • Develops systems and forms based on data to assist with the execution, assembling and analyzing of program outcomes.

 

Qualification Requirements:

 

Minimum

 

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  2. High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.

 

Preferred

 

  • Deep passion for working with the students in LYFE and District 79, including parenting students, and overage and under-credited youth who have gotten behind for a whole host of reasons.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in human services.
  • Able to multi-task, meet concurrent deadlines, manage shifting priorities, analyze and drive process improvement; organized and detail oriented
  • Experience in New York City public school system is a plus.
  • Strong project management and implementation experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

 

 

Salary: $52,322 + 

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not make less than their current salary.)
