Re: Gallup Teacher Insight Interview

Oy! I just took this test. I applied for a teacher assistant job in my county recently, and they required this test. When I saw the test, I was surprised. I have no teaching experience, and none is required for the teaching assistant job, which is why I applied for it. (I have 25 years of experience in book publishing, much of it in educational publishing, which is why I feel that teaching is a possible good lateral move for me.) But the questions are absurd for someone who has no teaching experience! Ninety-five percent of them deal with how you've handled students and parents, and what kind of recognition you need as a teacher. And whether you would ever consider a career other than teacher. (Well, of course I would... I already have.) So I had to lie to answer practically every question. I did my best, thinking of how I would answer them if I had ever taught, and thinking of how I had handled children in group settings in the past (helping out in my daughter's classroom, on field trips, at Girl Scouts, etc.) As an editor, I didn't like the wording of the questions and answers. There was so much left unsaid. My true and honest answers often didn't fit any of the choices given, especially on the "personality" questions. And the timing? Twenty seconds to read a question, choose an answer, and hit "enter"? Geez! If you sneeze, you've used up half your time! I feel that this type of test rewards dishonesty, and that leaves me feeling very icky. I know that I shouldn't want to work for anyone is satisfied with hiring based on a test that rewards the disingenuous, but I really need a job.... [sigh]
