Post: Bummed out

Posted by Amanda on 6/18/08

I have been working my butt off the last year to get in
good with the public schools in my area. I live in stark
county ohio, and if you don't know...its a horrible place
to be looking for a teaching job because most of northeast
ohio cannot pass a levy to fund the schools. I just had
the job interview of a lifetime. It was the district that
I graduated from (a plus for hiring I was told), I
completed a 2 month long term there, plus I had been
subbing quite regularly there since September. I had a
recommendation from the principal of the school that I
subbed for (this particular elementary was not hiring),
plus recommendations from 3 of the teachers within the
district. I got the second interview (I was one of 11) and
I thought that the lesson I had planned and presented was
awesome and that I was a sure thing to get the job with all
of the components that I just listed. But today I got the
rejection letter that said that this district only hires
the "most qualified and best candidates to serve the school
and community" and that "the talent pool is tough and that
I was not not recommended for employment at this time."
Needless to say I was shocked. (the funny thing is...my
friend Jen who just graduated in December, and whom I gave
all my phone numbers of sub secretaries in the county so
she may find some work, and whom also informed me a few
weeks ago that she wasn't getting very many sub jobs and
whom I also mentioned that this district was hiring got the
3rd grade position that I so wanted). Although I had
pretty much figured out yesterday that I hadn't gotten the
job since my friend Jen informed me that she already
received a call. So I have been balling my eyes out for 2
days now because I feel like maybe I have worked my whole
life for this and I am just not cut out for it. Because I
honestly do not know what else I could have done. How did
Jen with just a few experiences in the district nailed the
job that I had so maticulously planned for? I am at a
crossroads because I have sent out over 70 resumes to
counties that border mine and I have not recieved any
interviews. The liklihood of getting a job around here is
slim to none and I do not have much mobility since my
husbands' self owned company is here. I have no idea where
to go with my life and I don't know if I even want to
continue with education because I can't take a 3rd year of
days of tears without a job offer. Does anyone out there
have any advice or words of wisdom for a struggling
teacher? Or what you would do in my situation? I have
also spent the past 48 hours filling out as many teacher
job websites as possible and sending out a few last ditch
effort resumes to some distant schools. I just feel that
there is no hope left of me every fulfilling my dream to be
a classroom teacher. Seriously, does anyone have anything
that may be of help to me? I am absolutely desperate.
