Lots of people leave other careers/majors to become
teachers. I don't think it's frowned upon. I read somewhere
that the average person has 3 careers now, so changing
fields is no big deal anymore. However, be aware that
teaching social studies is insanely competitive. There's a
joke in education: what is every social studies teacher's
name? Coach. You have to coach cheerleading/sports to get
into social studies. Being a teacher is not nearly enough in
    SS.

There's lots of unemployed teachers running around. Really
do your homework on the districts/states you want to move
    to.
