If it is any consolation, the Catholic School I worked for for six
years just laid six of us off in May (the Friday of Teacher
Appreciation week). It came as a devastating surprise. We were all
told we would not be receiving a contract due to economic cutbacks.
Four teachers, one secretary, and the cafeteria cook all got the same
routine.
If I told you 4 of the 6 were 55+ and on the Archdiocesan Insurance
Plan, what would you be thinking right now? Exactly. Two lawyers
have informed us that it is unethical but not illegal. There you
go...the C Church acting unethically. I would agree with one of your
respondents, not the first time.
We that grew up in the faith have a deep desire, I think, to try and
make things right. I assume you also know that after 20 years you
have no ability to draw unemployment due to the separation of church
and state. This was the final straw that made the entire staff
gasp...from the 30 year veteral to me at six years. There is no
seniority system in place either.
My intent is to hold my head hight and know I gave that school heart
and soul and move on. I will NEVER work in a private school system
again. I totally understand your pain and loss. MT
