    Is this friend a teacher as well who knows your work? If so, it might not be so
    extreme to call them and drop her name. Could she perhaps speak to them and
    put in a good word?

    However, if this friend is simply a connection that knows them I would let it go. I
    have seen people be interviewed just bc they know someone. The interviewer feels
    awkard bc they are being forced to grant the interview. You would have a much
    better chance getting an interview on your own.
