Concepts Taught: Apply knowledge of addition and subtraction of money into real-life situations

Objectives
Pupils should be able to
1. have a hands-on experience of buying and selling with money within $100.
2. use addition and subtraction of money appropriately.
3. solve word problems.
4. create word problems.

Strategy
Pairwork

1. Each pupil is to prepare his play money worth of $22.50 a day before.
2. Ask pupils to recall the algorithm of addition and subtraction of money.
3. Emphasize the importance of the '$' sign , the '.', and the alignment of the signs and numbers.
4. Split the class up into two groups and start briefing pupils on activity.
5. Within each group, pair up pupils and assign them as 'Sellers' or 'Buyers'. 'Sellers' and 'Buyers' can only trade within their group.
6. Each pair of pupils is to combine their play money to total up to $45.
7. Brief 'Buyers' on their roles.
i. They will go on a shopping spree to buy 3 items using their money. Once they buy an item, they keep the item card.
ii. The items bought and the amount spent are to be recorded down on their worksheet.
iii. At the end of the spree, they are to total up their expenditure and find out how much they have left.
iv. Then, they have to count their play money to tally with their worksheet.
8. Brief 'Sellers' on their roles.
i. Each pair of pupils is to display their goods along with the price tags (matching colour).
ii. They will sell their goods to whichever 'Buyers' who are interested. When the goods is sold, the price tag is turned over.
iii. After each sale, they are to record down the item sold and the amount spent on their worksheet.
iv. At the end of the spree, they are to total up their earnings with the $45 they have at the start of the activity to find out the total.
v. Then, they have to count their play money to tally with their worksheet.
9. Tell pupils that they may need to use their jotter books to do working when calculating the change.
10. Give out the worksheets to the respective pairs.
11. Distribute the shopping cards to the 'Sellers'.
12. Carry out the activity.
13. Collect the worksheets and shopping cards.
