I use Once There was a Bullfrog by Rick Walton to teach compound words. You can read the book using the document camera.

After you read the book, you can put a list of a few words under the doc camera and brainstorm some words to add that made compound words.

sun

snow

water

dog

sand

lunch

Then give the students some time to come up with compound words of their own.

A fun thing to do with compound words is to cut a sheet of paper in half and then tri-fold it so the flaps meet in the middle.

Then have the children draw and write the two words on each outside flap. Example, a cup on one flap, a cake on the other.

Then they open the two flaps (think of barn doors) and on the inside they write the compound word and draw a picture of a cupcake.

I wish I could draw it for you. It's much simpler to "see" than describe. But it makes a nice lesson and then I put them on a bulletin board or tape them up somewhere so the kids can go over
and read the two words then open the flaps and see the compound word.
