Introduction to Internet for Primary Teachers

Goal: To help primary staff build an interest in using the internet to enhance their
teaching.

Format: Three one-hour sessions.

Content: A scavenger hunt will be used to go beyond the doors of the classroom to discover new people, places, and activities using the internet.

Session One

The day you were born was a very important day in history. To find out what happened on this day, you will need to visit the web site:

This Day in History http://www.historychannel.com/today/

1. What is one thing that happened on this day in history?

2. Who else was born on your birthday that you would like to meet?

3. What else can you find out at this web site?

Close the door to This Day in History and meet a fellow educator on a new web site:

Kathy Schrock http://discoveryschool.com/schrockguide/

Find an idea you can use in your classroom and be prepared to share with your colleagues.

Candybar-toss: Catch a candy bar and share an idea to keep the candy bar.

Session Two

Now we'll meet someone who can answer some questions for us on a new web site:

Ask Jeeves for Kids http://www.ajkids.com/

1. Ask Jeeves a question and find the answer.

2. Go back to the home page and scroll down. Find a holiday idea you can use in your classroom.

Session Three

What happens when light, air, and water meet? Go to this web site:

Yahooligans http://www.yahooligans.com/

The students will have an opportunity to explore and answer the question on their own. They will then be guided through the process if they have been unable to find the answer.

Process: Go to Yahooligans
click on Science and Nature
click on Weather
click on Rainbows
click on 1. Questions about rainbows.
