#138. Coin Poems

Mathematics, level: Elementary
Posted by Addie Gaines (againes@netins.net).
Seneca Elementary School, Seneca, MO 64865 USA
Materials Required: chart paper, illustrations of penny, nickel, dime, quarter
Activity Time: 10 to 15 minutes
Concepts Taught: Coin recognition

I use the following poems to help kindergarten children learn to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Print poems on to large chart paper, add illustrations and read chorally.

Penny, penny,
Easily spent
Copper brown
and worth one cent.

Nickel, nickel,
Thick and fat,
You're worth five cents.
I know that.

Dime, dime,
Little and thin,
I remember,
You're worth ten.

Quarter, quarter
Big and bold,
You're worth twenty-five
I am told!
