Concepts Taught: Reading poetry, rhythm, rhyme

A friend of mine uses this in her 1st grade intergrated classroom. It laso works well in my 1st/2nd grade cross cat special ed room. Choose a short poem (my kids LOVE Shel Silverstein) and write EACH word on a strip (sut them to size). Have a copy of the poem on a sheet of paper. Let the kids order the poem in a pocket chart like a puzzle using the poem as a guide. They can take turns reading the poem with the pointer (they get to be the teacher)! Also, have the poems written on chart paper all around the room. The students can walk around and read past poems. The children bring their poetry folders home to read to their parents, they illustrate the poems on Fridays. The ideas are never ending.
