I always teach my students this rhyme when rounding. I am not sure where it came from, but it's been around awhile in my territory. "When rounding, find your place, (tens, hundreds, thousands) look next door, if I am five or more, add one more, if I am four or less, stay my place." For example, put the number 426 and ask to round to the nearest hundred, They underline the hundred and box in the number next door ( the ten) and would see it is four or less and stay the place ( the hundreds would be rounded to four hundred.)
