The Office of National Drug Control Policy have teamed up with the popular WB Network television program Dawson's Creek and the L.A. Lakers professional basketball team to launch an exciting essay competition for students age 12 to 18 years. The contest, "Young People and Drugs -- What Do You Think?" asks students for opinions on some of the toughest drug-related issues they face.

The two students whose essays best reflect the suggested topics will either take a trip to North Carolina to visit the set of Dawson's Creek or to Los Angeles to check out the Lakers at a pre-game shoot-around and game. The students' observations may be printed in React next summer as well as appear in an ONDCP print public service announcement for its Straight Scoop News Bureau (www.straightscoop.org). Deadline for the free contest is February 25, 2000; contest rules and an entry form may be downloaded via http://www.react.com/games_contests/drugfree. Educators can check out the corresponding teachers' guide at www.teachers.react.com.
