#1636. Branches of Government Windsocks

Social Studies, level: Elementary
Posted Sat Mar 18 12:35:02 PST 2000 by Susan A. Smith ().
Pat Henry Elementary School, Lawton, OK, USA
Materials Required: red, white, blue construction paper, newspapers, glue, scissors
Activity Time: 1-2 45 minute periods
Concepts Taught: Understand the different duties of each branch

After students discuss the 3 branches of USA government the make a windsock. Choose a color for the windsock, then make three 2" streamers from the remaining 2 colors. Write the name of each branch on a streamer. Students find pictures, words, and numbers from the newspaper that clearly show duties of that specific branch and glue them on the correct streamer. Tie string through the top of the sock and it is ready to hang.
A good time to do this is after a major election so more of these terms are likely to be in the paper.
