#1767. Mitten Math Game

Mathematics, level: Elementary
Posted Tue May 16 15:32:33 PDT 2000 by judy bussler (judybussler@hotmail.com).
McKinley Elementary , Dowagiac, Mi
Materials Required: dice, animal pictures from the Mitten Book
Activity Time: 20 - 30 minutes
Concepts Taught: sequencing - addition - subtraction

The object of the math game is to first read the Mitten Story by Jan Brett.Make copies of the animals (found in Frank Schaffer's Mitten Story). The children each have copies of all the animals plus a paper mitten or a baggie to put the animals in when they make the correct addition or subtraction fact with their dice. To put the first animal into the mitten or baggie one must make a one with the two dice. The second animal may be inserted when making two, etc. all the way up to eight, when the mouse enters the mitten. This can be played easily with first graders in groups of 5 - 6 with a teacher to begin with and then in partners. (I have asked Jan Brett for permission to use this idea and received her OK as long as it is not sold).
