Evnas Valley Elem, Rogue River, OR, USA
Materials Required: ChalkBoard/Whiteboard Indoor basketball hoop or trash can works fine, score keeper..
Activity Time: 20 minutes
Concepts Taught: Spelling game

1.Weekly spelling list or vacabulary words works great for this pre-test game.
2.Divide class into two teams (count off by 1,2 or A,B)
3.Depending on how desks are arranged pick a student from each team to come to the board.
4.Each student picks a writing utensil and prepares for the spelling/vocabulary word.
5.Teacher says word out loud and the two students quickly spell it on the board.
6.First student to spell it correctly gets 1 point and the opportunity to shoot for 2 more points.
7.The correct speller stands on a predetermined line and shoots a ball or paper wad into a hoop or trash can.
8.If the shot is made the team gets another 2 points.
9.Game continues with the next two players ...
10.Team with the most points at the end of the game get a treat or verbal praise. At the fifth grade level I try to give more verbal praise for job well done so that they learn to focus on the intrinsic rewards.
