#2055. Human body group activity

Science, level: Middle
Posted Sat Jan 13 14:42:34 PST 2001 by Jamie Jones (jamer321@aol.com).
Boston, USA
Materials Required: Listed Below
Activity Time: Students need about an hour a day for week
Concepts Taught: Learning about the different systems of the human body

In this activity, students will need to be split up into groups of 4 or 5. There is not much preparation for the teacher, except to provide a few materials including at least a 1 1/2' by 2' peice of cardboard for each group. The students should provide and bring in the rest of the materials the need. Next, the teacher needs to assign each group a system over the body (circulatory, respiratory, digestive, etc.). The students are to make a model of their body system by using items such as playdough, pipe cleaners, balloons, and straws and gluing these items on the card board. Hot glue works best. Make sure they use a variety of items; don't let them just use playdough. They must include every organ, bone, muscle, etc. that is in their system but there is no need to include anything else. They may want to use paint to make a nice background for their project, and they also may want to make an outside outline of the body in proportion to however big their other organs are. Let them use their imagination! This works very well for me and I think it will for most anyone. Please write me if you have any further questions!
