#2338. Back To School Rhythm Review

Music, level: Elementary
Posted Mon Aug 13 12:55:46 PDT 2001 by Rosemary Shaw (riscats@aol.com).
Mary R. Tisko School, Branford, CT
Materials Required: Poster or Chalkboard
Activity Time: 5-10 minutes
Concepts Taught: Recognition of rhythm patterns

At the beginning of each school year, my students play a Rhythm Review Game. On a poster (or the chalkboard) four or five rhythm patterns are written, each with an identifying letter. The class is divided into 2-4 teams, and each team gets a chance to try first. I clap and say a line which will fit one of the patterns. Students must identify the rhythm pattern.
(Examples are: School is cool. Music class is fun. Always do your best. Use your ears to listen well.) Winners get to line up first. This game can be extended to holiday sayings, as well. We always end by having the entire class clap and say each rhythm pattern
