Go back and forth between the teacher choosing and the children choosing the vocabulary words.

AFTER several chapters, I notice that my students are ready to switch to another comprehension lesson. So I then switch to teaching PREDICTIONS.

Before Reading --
Making Predictions. Have the class sit in a circle. Re-read the last paragraph of yesterday's chapter. Make a prediction of what you think might happen. Then go around the circle, "I think ________ might happen."

During Reading --
Think about the predictions that you and your classmates made while you are reading today. What sentences in the story change what your predictions are?

After Reading --
Sit in a circle and share how the predictions change.

Continue the next several chapters making predictions and noting how the text helps change the predictions.
