Day Two
First Reading on Day Two
Before Reading — Look at this sentence, "Is it alive?" What kind of sentence is it? Is it telling you something or asking you something?

Students: asking
Teacher: Why?
Students: Because your voice changes
Students: It ends in a question mark
Teacher: So this kind of sentence is called a question.

During Reading —
Let's read the book together and find all the questions. I will write the questions on the sentence strips. Do this IN FRONT of the students.

After Reading — Let's read the questions.

Second Reading on Day Two — SOME TEACHERS DO THIS ON DAY THREE
Before Reading —
NOW what happens when someone asks you a question? (You answer it.)
Set purpose for reading the story a second time:
Look for the answers to the questions we wrote.

During Reading —
Let's read the book together and find all the answers to the questions. I will write the answers on the sentence strips. Do this IN FRONT of the students.

After Reading —
Use a wide pocket chart so that the question and answer can be matched up. Have the students use the book to confirm the answers.

Day Three
Before Reading —
Have two sentence strips made up for each student.
"Yes, it is."
"No, it is not."

During Reading —
The teacher shows the items in the book asking, "Is it alive?"

The children hold up correct response. Then the teacher shows the page with the answer saying, "Make yours look like mine."

After Reading — CONNECTING WRITING TO READING
