#2482. Letter recognition of Names

Reading/Writing, level: Kindergarten
Posted Sat Nov 9 10:10:42 PST 2002 by Rita Righter (Karl@Righter.com).
William Frangus Elementary, Orlando
Materials Required: Chart with song and Beginning Letter of each childs name.
Activity Time: 15 minutes
Concepts Taught: Letter names are learned by repetition of singing

Sung to the tune of "Old Time Rock N Roll"

I know the first letter of my name
I know it will always be the same
Now I want to know the next one too (second could substituefor next)
Oh me Oh my, Oh me, Oh, what shall I do?

Each student has tiles with first letter and various strategies are used so they can get to the next letter and so on. As soon as you feel he/she have mastered that letter, write it on the chart.

Next lesson, review and then go on to next letter.
So many poems, are sung to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Clementime. I thought this would be refreshing.

Note: I am a Reading Literacy teacher for "at risk" students. First year at this and loving it but need lots of ideas.
