#2497. Sneetches by Dr. Seuss

Social Studies, level: Kindergarten
Posted Fri Mar 1 14:18:36 PST 2002 by Kiki (hollygolitely63@hotmail.com).
Cool Spring Elementary, Adelphi, Maryland, USA
Materials Required: Sneetches by Dr. Seuss, die-cut stars for half the class, chart paper, candy
Activity Time: half hour
Concepts Taught: Dr. Seuss, tolerance, discrimination, Black History

As students enter the classroom, give half of them die-cut stars. Tell them to keep the star for later. When you start the day, give the students with stars a piece of candy (or something special). Brainstorm/web how it feels to get/not get a piece of candy. Ask why did some students get a piece of candy and some didn’t? Is it fair that the students with stars got candy and the ones without didn’t? (You can also tie this idea into Black History Month/discrimination). After the discussion, I give all the students the candy.
Read Sneetches by Dr. Seuss
Discuss the story. Re-read and act it out.
