#2498. Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss

Mathematics, level: Kindergarten
Posted Fri Mar 1 14:26:29 PST 2002 by Kiki (hollygolitely63@hotmail.com).
Cool Spring Elementary, Adelphi, Maryland, USA
Materials Required: Yertle the Turtle book, pictures of 10 turtles, one piece of 18” x 6” strip of construction paper
Activity Time: 45 minutes
Concepts Taught: Dr. Seuss, sequencing numbers 1-10

Read Yertle the Turtle
Give each student one sheet of paper with ten turtles (I have each turtle in a rectangle – they will cut on the line of the rectangle). One turtle is bigger than all the rest. Nine are the same size. Students color the turtles and number them 1-10 (the biggest turtle is #10). They can also draw a crown on the big turtle. Cut the turtles out and glue onto a 18” x 6” strip of construction paper (each turtle on top of the other). Write “Yertle the Turtle” at the top. Modification: If your students cannot write numbers yet, give them the turtles with the numbers all ready on the them and have them sequence the turtles -- one on top of the other.
