#2629. Ghost Math

Mathematics, level: Elementary
Posted Mon Jul 8 13:45:52 PDT 2002 by Christine (smcalum98c@aol.com).
Manor View Elementary, Ft. Meade, MD
Materials Required: 10 dried beans per student in baggies, "haunted house" game mat
Activity Time: 20 minutes
Concepts Taught: Problem Solving, Adding and Subtracting to 10, Listening, Following Oral Instructions

Before the lesson put 3 black dots with permanant marker on each bean so it looks like a ghost. Put 10- 20 beans in each bag depending on the level of the student. Pass out copies of the house, try to include in the drawing an old tree, or some other "land mark" outside of the house. Have students place their ghosts somewhere on the mat or their desks, and call out word problems to have them add or subtract ghosts from the pile.
Ex. 10 ghosts are in the attic, 7 fly to the front door, how many are left? Continue to say the problems and walk around to monitor student's progress. You may choose to leave a bag of ghosts and a mat out as a center for individual practice. This is a great activity around Halloween!
