ORIGINAL LESSON PLAN FOR GENERAL EDUCATION 5TH GRADE CLASS:

Anticipatory Set:
q Tell the students we will be continuing our reading in “In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson”
q The student in charge of handing out material will hand out copies of the book.
q Students will raise their hand if they wish to:
o Answer a question
o Ask a question
o Volunteer to read


Presentation:
q Students will be asked:
o What was happening in the story when we last read?
o What are some things you remember from the story so far?
o What do you think might happen next?
q Students will be told what page to turn to.

Guided Practice:
q Students will be asked to volunteer to take turns reading.
q As the class comes to particular passages, the following questions will be asked:
o What is meant by “America’s favorite pastime?”
o Why do you think Baseball is America’s favorite pastime?
o Why is being a team member important?
o Why is being an individual important?
o What is a sharecropper?
o Why do you think Shirley has not written back to Fourth Cousin yet?
o What is meant by “Dodger fever”?
o How do you think Shirley is going to take Toscanini for a walk?
o Do you think Shirley’s parents are going to be pleased that she volunteered them to take care of rent collection while the Señora is away?
o What do you think is meant by the, “twenty-eight intruders fashioned by the dentist?”
o What do you think Father’s surprise for Shirley is?

Independent Practice:
q Student responsible for handing out material will hand out sheets of paper.
q Students will be asked to write six sentences about the chain of events in the story starting from the beginning, up to the point we are at in the story.
q The class will come up with the first sentence together, and possibly the second or third as needed.

Assessment:
q Student papers will be collected and checked for:
o Accuracy of the events
o Correct chronological order of events
o Sentences are complete
o Correct grammar and punctuation is used


POSSIBLE MODIFICATIONS FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION MILD/MOD 5TH GRADE CLASS:

Anticipatory Set:
q Tell the students we will be continuing our reading in “In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson”
q The student in charge of handing out material will hand out copies of the book.
q Students will raise their hand if they wish to:
o Answer a question
o Ask a question
o Text on audio tape played for class OR
o Teacher to read aloud to class OR
o Passage will be read via the following:
Teacher will start off the reading and read for a page or two.
Next, Teacher will pick a student to read by standing next to his/her desk and tapping her/him on the shoulder
The student will stand up; Teacher will sit at student’s desk, while the student will take a turn at reading until s/he no longer wished to read.
The student will pick another student of the opposite sex to read by standing next to his/her, tapping him/her on the shoulder, and taking his/her seat once s/he is standing to take his/her turn.
This will continue until all have read and/or as time permits.

Guided Practice:
q As the class comes to particular passages, the following questions will be asked:
o What is meant by “America’s favorite pastime?”
o Why do you think Baseball is America’s favorite pastime?
o Why is being a team member important?
o Why is being an individual important?
o What is a sharecropper?
o Why do you think Shirley has not written back to Fourth Cousin yet?
o What is meant by “Dodger fever”?
o How do you think Shirley is going to take Toscanini for a walk?

q Students will be shown how to fold a sheet pf paper to make six squares
q Student will be instructed to draw a picture in each square depicting the chain of events in the story starting from the beginning, up to the point we are at in the story.
q The class will come up with the picture ideas sentence together, and possibly the second or third as needed.

Assessment:
q Student papers will be collected and checked for:
o Accuracy of the events
o Correct chronological order of events
o Detailed drawings clearly depicting and particular event (e.g. not a stick figure depicting a generic event).
