Concepts Taught: Compound words

Have pairs come up with a compound word. One of
the children writes the first part on his sheet of blank white paper, and the second
child writes the second part of the compound on his sheet of paper. I have first grade,
so I record the compound words on the board and we talk about the ones they
made.....Now comes the fun part....Have all the kids with the first part of the
compound words to come to the front of the room and all the kids with the second
parts of the compound words to go to the back. have them to make a ball with their
papers and proceed to have a snowball battle... Keep it going for a while, they will
love it. When you think you have disturbed the rest of the school enough, have them
each pick up a snowball. Have them silently walk around the room to see if they can
find a word to go with theirs to make a compound word. It can be a new one or one
that was made previously. This is a good time to assess if the children really
understand the concept. After everyone has a match, make a new list on the board
and discuss how some new words were made, and how some stayed the same. This
is a great activity to do with any type of matching activity.....color words and colors,
upper and lowercase letters, states and capital, and on and on. I always do it with
compound words.

The book, "Once There Was A Bullfrog" is a great
book for predicting compound words.
