#30. letter geography

Reading/Writing, level: elementary
Posted by Becky Hunt (becscot@mint.net).
Dresden Elementary, US
Materials Required: World map.
Concepts Taught: letter identification and map skills

When teaching my class a new letter each week, I take out a world map. I then point to a country, or body of water beginning with that letter and we discuss the geographical features of our chosen area. For example, when we studied Jj, we found Japan on the map. The children were introduced to the concept of islands when they saw the shape of Japan on the map. It's great to see them go back to the maps after the lesson to find other locations beginning with the letter of the week.
