st. john's early education, worthington, ohio, usa
Materials Required: found objects and glue
Activity Time: 30 min
Concepts Taught: children see art in a new light using found objects; concept of texture

what you will need:
a brown paper lunch sack filled with found objects (yarn scraps, fabric scraps, pop bottle caps, moveable eyes, sticks, wood shapes, rocks, acorns, anything)
glue
cigar box or something to put all the stuff in

begin a brief description about collages. then include artists like rauchenberg, nevelson, etc. in your talk. discuss the raw materials. ask the children to focus on the way they feel. are they soft? hard? metal? wood? rubber?, etc. give each child a paper sack that's been filled with these "scraps before class. invite the children to select their own bag from the lot of them. ask them to pull items from the bag and begin gluing in place. the surprise element with regard to what's in the bag is exciting to the kids.
