#3386. Cool Cookie Math

Mathematics, level: Elementary
Posted Fri Feb 18 12:14:49 PST 2005 by Carrie Thomas (thomasca@pickens.k12.sc.us).
McKissick Elementary, Easley, SC
Concepts Taught: Value of Coins, Making Change

Cool Cookie Math
A culmination activity to review the value of coins and how to make change up to one dollar.

Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Curriculum Area: Math

Lesson Objective:
1. The student will demonstrate knowledge of the value of coins.
2. The student will be able to make change from one dollar.

Procedures:
1. The teacher will review coins with the class using overhead money. The class will complete two or three money word problems together.
Ex: If Lisa had $.75 and she bought a piece of gum for $.25, how much change will she get back?
2. The teacher will distribute $1.00 (using different coins, 2 quarters, 2 dimes, 4 nickels, 10 pennies) to each student. The teacher will then distribute a copy of the Cool Cookie Shop worksheet to each student.
3. The teacher will explain to the students that they must decide how they want to spend their $1.00. Students do not have to spend all of the money. They can choose to buy whatever they would like, any combination of items, from the Cool Cookie Shop menu.
4. After each student has decided how he/she wants to spend his/her money, he/she must illustrate and write their plan on their Cool Cookie Shop worksheet.
5. When students have completed their worksheet, they can go to the Cool Cookie Shop to purchase the items and decorate their cookie.
5. The teacher needs to put children in groups of two. Partners will go to the cookie shop together. One will work at the shop and make change as the other partner purchases his/her items. Then, they will switch places. This method allows each child to have the opportunity to work at the store and demonstrate knowledge of how to make change.
6. When everything has been purchased, students may go back to their desk, decorate the cookies, and ENJOY!
7. The teacher may want to have a money review sheet for students to complete while they are waiting to go to the Cookie store or while others wait for everyone to finish.
