North Barrington School, Barrington, IL
Materials Required: Coconut Tree, letters
Concepts Taught: Letter Sounds

We use Jolly Phonics in our Kindergarten program. I read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom at the beginning of the year and as we introduce a daily letter sound (42 in our language) we recite "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, will there be enough room?" as a student velcro's a laminated letter to a large hanging 6 foot coconut tree. The tree hangs from the ceiling so it is seen throughout the room all day. I found mine at a party store.
This is a nice visual and we often will review the sounds off the tree using a pointer. Of course, at the end of the year, we decide there was enough room for our coconut tree! Past students always come in and say they remember the coconut tree.
