Color Water Falls

Materials Needed:
5 lb. block of ice
Salt shakers
Primary colors of food coloring
Eye droppers
Turkey baster
Cups
Large clear plastic container
Water

Skills: Chemistry, cause and effect, color mixing

For this center I will demonstrate how to use the eye droppers for the whole class using the turkey baster and a large clear cup. At the center with adult supervision, the kids can use the salt shakers to shake salt onto the ice block. With some adult narration they will be able to see that the salt melts the ice. Then they can use the eye droppers to drop colored water into crevasses they made. As they add the different colors they will see they color mixing effects. In the bottom of the container they will also see how the three colors together make brown. For advanced students this activity can be tied to a demonstration and discussion of pollution and erosion.
