#4124. Ant Farms Experiments

Science, level: all
Posted Wed Feb 27 14:24:48 PST 2008 by Randi Jones (Randi Jones).
Ant Farm Experiments
Butterfly & Nature Store, WA, USA
Materials Required: ant farm, ants
Activity Time: 2 days
Concepts Taught: ants, biology, life cycle

Does cold or warm temperatures affect how ants move?

Any ant farm will work for this science project. Ants can take up to 6 weeks to receive if you order a farm with a mail-in certificate for ants. We suggest ordering your farm "with Live ants now" if there is a time limit on your project.

Place your ants in the Habitat when they arrive, per the directions in your kit.

After 1 day, measure and record the temperature in the room and observe the ant’s movement and behavior.

Put the ant farm into a refrigerator (not the freezer) for 10 minutes then remove the ant farm. Observe the ant’s movement and behavior.

Did the ants move slower if they were warm or cold? Why would that happen?
