#4195. lowest number

Mathematics, level: all
Posted Sun May 25 08:19:07 PDT 2008 by Terry (Terry).
LCCVI, Petrolia, Canada
Materials Required: paper, sticky pads work great
Activity Time: 15 minutes minimum
Concepts Taught: probability, bar graphs, data collection, strategy formation

Object: Students are asked to guess a Natural number ( 1, 2, 3, ...). They will write their guess onto a piece of paper (sticky pad works best). The winner is the person that guesses the lowest number that no other student has guessed.

Procedure:

Students put their guess and their name onto a sticky memo pad paper. The teacher collects the papers and sticks them to the blackboard forming a bar chart. The winner will be the student who has the only entry over the lowest number.

Teacher can discuss with students data collection, analysis using a bar chart, probabilities and game strategy.

Prizes enhance the game play.
