Language, level: Middle
Posted Mon Sep 1 09:11:58 PDT 2008 by Christine Kirov (Christine Kirov).
Nellie Coffman Middle School, Cathedral City, CA
Materials Required: Chris Brown's song "Dreamer"
Activity Time: 90 minutes
Concepts Taught: autobiographical writing

Did you watch the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing? If so, you probably heard Chris Brown’s theme song, “Dreamer.” Study the lyrics on the back of this page, and listen to the inspirational song. What do you think Chris Brown’s message is? What does it mean to be a Dreamer? How will you know when you’ve achieved your dream?

Assignment:
Think about your ultimate dream. What do you hope to accomplish in your lifetime? What steps will you take to ensure the success of your dream? What are you willing to sacrifice in order to achieve your dream?

Write an essay describing your dream and outlining the steps that it will take to achieve that dream. Begin by analyzing the lyrics of Chris Brown’s song.

Include an illustration of your future success. What will it feel like to achieve your dream? Imagine yourself reaching your goal. Draw a picture or find an image (like the one above) to depict your feelings.
