Reading/Writing, level: Elementary
Posted Sat May 16 20:13:43 PDT 1998 by Susan Sauer (SSauer@aol.com).
Pittsburgh Public Schools, Pittsburgh, PA
Materials Required: Holiday Decoration, scissors, markers, ziplock baggie
Activity Time: Prep: 15 minutes Paired act.: 20 minutes
Concepts Taught: Phonics Analysis

This is a great idea for reviewing phonograms within words and utilizing a motivating holiday theme. Buy store seasonal paper decorations for windows/bulleting boards.
Trace the outline of the decoration on to a large piece of oak tag. Cut the decoration into several puzzle pieces. Trace the puzzle piece onto the oak outline. Put a word on the puzzle and a matching phonogram on the matching oaktag puzzle outline. Put all puzzle pieces into a ziplock bag. Students pull pieces out of bag and match word with phonogram on game board. Play until all puzzle pieces are matched and the decoration is reassembled.
