#46. More Kindergarten Phonics

Reading/Writing, level: Pre-School
Posted by Sheryl Cooke (scooke@4kz.com.au).
Australia
Materials Required: cardboard, glue, bric-a-brac items
Concepts Taught: phonics

The kindergarten/pre-school child is still very much focused on themselves and their identity. I used this to great advantage a couple of years ago with the initial sounds of each child's name. We cut the letter out of cardboard grocery boxes. The children had to select objects that started with the same sound as their name to glue onto their initial sound. Eg. Catherine selected cotton buds, Timothy chose tinsel etc. It was amazing how quickly these 4-5 year olds associated the letter shapes with the initial sound. They also looked great hanging all around the room.
